Become a Member

Membership of Citizens Advice and Rights Fife (CARF) is open to the following:

  • Any individual (if aged 18 or over) who lives or works in Fife
  • Any individual who is a member of the volunteer staff of the company
  • An employee of CARF shall not be eligible for Membership

An individual eligible for membership under a. or b., who wishes to become a member, shall lodge with the company a written application for membership signed by him/her and in the case of an application under b, signed by the appropriate officers of the body or department nominating him/her for membership. 

CARF seeks to ensure a broad representation in its membership.

CARF also seeks to ensure that its membership reflects the communities it serves and that all sections of the community are represented.  Membership is open to all regardless of colour, race, nationality, ethnic or national origins, gender, disability, age or sexuality.  To this end, the association particularly welcomes applications from black and minority ethnic and individuals with experience of disability.

We also seek to recruit as members, those with a particular interest in joining the Board of Directors to oversee the running of the organisation.  To this end, we welcome applications from those with experience or interest in:

  • governance
  • human resources and personnel
  • stakeholder interests
  • management in voluntary/advice/commercial sector
  • finance and funding
  • resource management
  • quality standards and continuous improvement
  • media/PR

Member roles and responsibilities

Members are entitled to receive a copy of the Annual Report and Notice of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and to vote at such meetings.

CARF will review the membership prior to the AGM to ensure that it remains representative.

Members should be willing to attend AGMs.

Application process

All applications for membership must be made to the Registered Office of Citizens Advice and Rights Fife using this application form and must be approved by the Board of Directors. The names of members will be entered into a Register of Members.

All applicants must meet the relevant membership conditions.  In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate they support the twin aims of Citizens Advice and Rights Fife, which are:

  • to ensure that individuals do not suffer through ignorance of their rights and responsibilities of the services available; or through an inability to express their needs.

and equally

  • to exercise a responsible influence on the development of social policies and services, both locally and nationally.

You will be notified of the decision on your application as soon as possible following the Board meeting at which your application was discussed.  On acceptance you will receive a further pack of information, which will include a copy of the Memorandum and Articles of Association and more information about the Board of Directors.

Withdrawal of Membership

Membership shall not be transferable and shall cease on death.

A Member shall cease to be a member if he/she ceases to be a resident or work in Fife.

Any individual who wishes to withdraw from Membership shall lodge with the Company a written notice of retiral, signed by him/her.  He or she shall cease to be a Member with effect from that time at which the notice is received by the Company.
